Sonae Delivery
Development of a smart delivery system for frozen and
refrigerated products in cars without controlled temperature
Overview
In order to make deliveries more efficient and to be able to prepare refrigerated and frozen products in advance, a passive refrigeration system with a qualified monitoring sensor was developed for the deliveries of this food retailer. With this system, deliveries can all be prepared overnight and delivered during the day without compromising the quality of thermosensitive products. This solution fits in with other delivery containers for products that do not require controlled temperature.
Increase in parcel delivery
Thermal Boxes in circulation
Daily Deliveries
CO2 reduction
Traceability
The Challenge
Without compromising the quality of each product, the aim is to develop a reusable solution that allows more flexibility in the preparation and delivery of orders. This should translate into an increase in the number of deliveries.
With the introduction of monitoring, it should be possible to control the data of each order/delivery. Developing passive refrigeration solutions aims to replace active refrigeration cars with cars without controlled temperature.
The Solution
The development of these smart containers allowed them to be reusable, sanitized, sustainable and monitorable, while allowing for each of them to have a barcode, attached to each customer’s order on every delivery.
This is possible by an app specifically developed for this system and operation. The GN1/2 container is qualified for frozen products (<-15oC) and the GN1/1 container is qualified for refrigerated products (2 to 8°C) by our laboratory – – ZØR FabLab.
These smart boxes, upon completion of delivery, provide us with a summary report with temperature, time and trajectory.

The Results
After 8 months of this implemented system, it was possible to see that the more than 8000 boxes in circulation allowed an average of daily deliveries of around 5000, which represents a 30% increase with the same structure.
This milestone in sustainability is very important for the company and for the planet. This system allows full control of the order in terms of temperature, time, and route, so it is possible to have full traceability in the report issued by each box.
